The Powerhouse Museum presents the photographic exhibition
You & Mardi Gras: celebrating the history of
Mardi Gras - Images by Mazz on display from 7 February until
16 March, 2003.
Acclaimed
social photographer Mazz Image, is celebrating Mardi Gras’
25th anniversary through a stimulating exhibition of 27
photographic highlights of Sydney’s Gay & Lesbian
Festival (1989-2002).
This retrospective
exposition showcases photographs as selected from her debut
limited-edition book You and Mardi Gras – Images by
Mazz.
Incorporating
both black and white and colour images, Mazz has captured
all the quintessential Mardi Gras moments of the previous
14 years. Many community members will be able to re-live
and enjoy the journey that has been - Sydney’s Gay
& Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival.

the buffed boys, to the beautiful girls, and the dramatic
drag queens - they’re all there!” exclaims
exhibition photographer, Mazz Image. The photographic exhibition
explores different contextual themes of Sydney’s queer
history and features representatives from all sectors of
the burgeoning gay and lesbian community.

Drag
Show Performance
A public drag show performance featuring three of Sydney’s
most famous drag queens will launch the You & Mardi
Gras exhibition and events on Sunday 9 February. Veruska
Darling, Portia Turbo and Claire de Lune will perform an
explosive retrospective medley.

Purple
Haze: Mardi Gras history through images
A 15-minute digital show that takes visitors on a thematic
audiovisual journey through the Sydney Gay & Lesbian
Mardi Gras festivities (1989-2002).
This Mazz production showcases all the great iconic Mardi
Gras moments.

The
Big Wig: Australian premiere screening
A racy and irreverent snapshot of the world-renowned Sydney
Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade, capturing the highlights
from the televised parades (1997-99). Hosted by the effervescent
Vanessa Wagner, this energetic 45-minute documentary captures
the satire, politics and paparazzi of Sydney's most fabulous
public spectacle.
